So what is rugged?

It doesn’t take much to realize that today’s cell phone manufacturers are more interested in adding snazzy features like a super fast phonebook, apps, and high tech cameras, and cool looks than building a phone or tablet PC that will stand up to some serious abuse. After all, rugged cell phones and tablets are built for punishment and not necessarily style. The advantage, however is clear if you spend your time scaling rocks, hitting whitewater and engaging in other extreme sports.

Most of our truly rugged devices are brightly colored making them easier to find if you drop them; consider it an added feature, even if yellow isn’t your favorite hue.

As a mobile worker in the field, in the warehouse or on the manufacturing floor, you rely on your mobile phone or tablet to be dependable and provide reliable and consistent communication and access to data. We build mobile phones with the mobile worker in mind delivering ruggedness, dependability and powerful performance that ensures uptime and allows you to do your job more effectively and efficiently.

If you’re the rugged, outdoorsy type, you’ll need a cell phone to go along with you in your travels. Some cell phones and tablet PC are more suited to rough and tumble outdoor use than others. It’s a good idea to pick a device that has been specifically designed with durability in mind. These phones and tablets are ones that will stand you in good stead as you go about outdoor work or leisure time activities, get caught in unexpected weather, or get into rough housing with relatives on the back lawn.

How we test them?

You have seen some attractive movies when we punish rugged phones in concrete mixers, trying to call fishes in aquarium or throw them on the ground. It shows the hardiness of device obviously in reality, but how we test them in our labs? Here is some of many international testing standards and norms to ensure rugged phones ability to work in harshest environment:

IP Ratings

The Ingress Protection (IP) rating uses two numbers to describe how well the unit is protected against dust and water. The first number (1 to 6) measures dust protection; the second number (1 to 8) describes water protection.

Semi-Rugged Mobile devices

Semi-rugged phones can handle rougher treatment than a consumer-grade handheld, but they are not fully waterproof or dustproof. Most semi-rugged handhelds come with an IP rating of IP54. That means the unit is protected, though not sealed, against dust. It is resistant only to light splashing, but it's not able to withstand jet sprays or immersion. Some, but not all semi-rugged handhelds also meet some of the MIL-STD-810F standards, though not those for immersion or dust.

Ultra Rugged Mobile devices.

Ultra rugged handhelds come with an IP67 or IP68 rating, which means they are sealed against dust and can survive temporary immersion. They have also passed a full battery of MIL-STD-810F tests, including drops, vibration, immersion and temperature extremes.

MIL-STD-810F Method 500.4-Low Pressure

Low-pressure (altitude) chamber tests determine if materiel can withstand and operate in a low-pressure environment. The test also determines if materiel can withstand rapid pressure changes.

MIL-STD-810F Method 501.4-High Temperature

High temperatures may temporarily or permanently impair the performance of a handheld computer by changing the physical properties or dimensions of its casing as well as internal components.

MIL-STD-810F Method 502.4-Low Temperature

Extremely low temperatures have adverse effects on almost all basic materiel. As a result, exposing test items to low temperatures may either temporarily or permanently impair the operation of the test unit by changing the physical properties of its casing and components. Therefore, low temperature test must be considered whenever the test item will be exposed to temperatures below standard ambient.

MIL-STD-810F Method 503.4-Temperature Shock

Exposure to sudden, extreme temperature changes may temporarily or permanently affect the operation of the unit. Temperature shock tests are conducted to determine if materiel can withstand sudden changes in temperature without experiencing physical damage or deterioration in performance.

MIL-STD-810F Method 506.4-Rain

The rain test is conducted to determine if the protective covers or cases effectively prevent rain from penetrating the unit. The rain test also determines if the unit can satisfy its performance requirements during and after exposure to rain.

MIL-STD-810F Method 507.4-Humidity

Moisture can cause multiple types of physical and chemical deterioration. These include: surface effects such as corrosion and organic growth such as mold and mildew; moisture penetration that changes material properties; and condensation that affects electrical or mechanical performance.

MIL-STD-810F Method 510.4-Sand and Dust

The sand and dust test is divided into two procedures. The small-particle procedure (dust and fine sand) is performed to determine the ability of equipment to resist the effects of dust particles that may penetrate into cracks, crevices and joints. The blowing sand test is performed to determine the ability of equipment to be stored and used under blowing sand conditions. To pass the blowing sand test, there must be no loss of in performance, effectiveness, reliability, and maintainability due to the abrasion (erosion) or clogging effect caused by large, sharp-edged particles.

MIL-STD-810F Method 512.4-Immersion

The immersion test is conducted on operating and non-operating units that may be exposed to partial or complete immersion. In some cases this test maybe used in place of the rain test (Method 506.4) to verify a unit is watertight. This is acceptable provided the materiel configuration would be the same for both situations, and the method of water ingress is well understood. However, there are documented situations where the impact of the spray causes a pumping of water across the seals during the rain test. This does not occur in the immersion test, where the seals are held tight against a backing plate by the static pressure. For this reason, both the rain and immersion tests should be performed.

MIL-STD-810F Method 514.5-Vibration

Vibration testing is performed to determine the resistance of equipment to stress caused by vibration during shipment and in typical application environments.

MIL-STD-810F Method 516.5-Shock

Shock tests are performed to assure that materiel can withstand the relatively infrequent, non-repetitive shocks or transient vibrations encountered in normal use and transport. Shock tests are also used to measure an item's fragility, so that packaging may be designed to protect it if necessary. Mechanical shocks will excite an item to respond at both forced and natural frequencies.

Worldwide usage

No SIM Lock

Most of the phone shops encourage customers of a mobile service provider to remain loyal to that provider in the long run. The easiest technical way to do that is to disable possibility to change SIM card. Also called a “simlock” or network lock, a SIM lock is usually meant to ensure that customers who purchase a phone from a particular company continue to use that company’s services. Unless unlocked, a card that is locked will typically work only with the network provided by a particular company or in a certain region.

We don't go this way, 100% of our Rugged phones has never been locked. They will work with typical 25 mm × 15 mm SIM card.

Frequencies

GSM cell phones and tablet PC with GSM function can operate on four different frequency band types: 850 megahertz (MHz), 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz, depending on the country. Each Mobile operator has one standard of band or mix of bands, but usually they are using 850/1900 MHz or 900/1800 Mhz combinations. Our phones support all these frequency ranges.

When it comes about 3G, it's more complicated. Most of the 3G UMTS operators in Europe, Asia and Africa using 2100 MHz band with some exeptions, but in Americas these frequencies are uncommon. We always recommend to ask your Mobile operator about their 3G standard or to check the list of UMTS networks online http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UMTS_networks . Please compare your 3G provider frequency with technical specification listed in description before placing your order or contact us.

The charger

There are two basic standards for voltage and frequency in the world. One is the North American standard of 120 volts at a frequency of 60 Hz, and the other is the European standard of 220–240 volts at 50Hz. Beside different voltage, every part of the world has own AC Power plugs and sockets.

Voltage, frequency, and wall socket type vary widely, therefore we found a way to avoid possible disappointment unpacking new phone. All of our chargers can operate from 100V to 240V, covering all possible voltage range around the globe, both frequencies are compatible and of course please tell us your country, we will select suitable wall plug to you.

Dual SIM

Do you have a work phone and a private phone? Do you need to separate your business and private calls? There are many reasons to want or need two separate lines, and two SIMs in one device can be much more convenient than carrying two phones everywhere you go. This way, you can always be available on both of your lines, without any extra worry.

If you travel a lot, a dual SIM device can come in very handy. If you’ve ever travelled with your mobile device, you know you sometimes have no choice but to get a local SIM for data and calls. But what if you want to remain available on your home line as well? With a dual SIM phone, you can use data and make calls on the cheap using the local SIM, but stay available for incoming calls and text messages with your old home number. Pretty useful.

This one is for those who really want to go the extra mile. Sometimes you can find a really good deal for data with one provider, and an excellent deal for calls and texts with another. Most of us just find a good place in the middle and call it quits, but another way is to get a dual SIM device and enjoy both deals. If the plan doesn’t make you pay a monthly fee, and if the SIM cards themselves don’t cost too much, this could be an excellent way to get the best of both worlds.

All our phones operates under Dual Standby-SIM technology. Dual Standby mode allows two sim cards to be on standby waiting for a call. When a call is established on one sim card, the other is no longer active.

How does a dual SIM phone switch from one SIM card to another?
When you're using a wireless cell phone with two SIM cards when making calls is usually done by either pressing a button or making a menu selection. When your dual mobile is receiving calls then it's simply a case of first come first serve and the caller who gets in contact with you first talks to you first, regardless of which SIM their details are on.
